Static QR codes
A static QR code encodes the data directly into the image. It never expires, needs no server, and works forever — but the destination is fixed at generation time. Change the target and you must print a new code.
Static codes are free, private (nothing is uploaded), and ideal for one-time use cases like a WiFi sign, a business card, or a fixed menu link.
Dynamic QR codes
A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect link instead of the real destination. The redirect lives on a server, so you can change where it points without reprinting the code — and count scans, set expiry, add passwords, or route by device.
The trade-off is that dynamic codes depend on a service staying online and usually cost money. They’re best when you need editability or analytics after printing.
Which should you use?
If the destination won’t change and you don’t need scan counts, a free static code is simplest and most reliable. If you may need to update the link later or want analytics, a dynamic code pays for itself.
QRForge offers free static generation now; dynamic codes (with analytics, expiry, and routing) are a future paid tier.
Frequently asked questions
Do static QR codes expire?
No. Static codes encode the data directly and work forever, with no server involved.
Can I edit a static QR code’s destination?
No — the destination is baked into the image. To change it you must generate and reprint. Editing without reprinting requires a dynamic code.
Are dynamic QR codes better?
Not necessarily. They add editability and analytics but cost money and depend on a service staying online. For fixed links, static is simpler and free.
Does QRForge offer dynamic codes?
Static generation is free today. Dynamic codes with scan analytics and editable destinations are planned as a future paid tier.
