The short answer
The QR code was invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara, an engineer at Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary in Japan. He created it to track car parts on the factory floor — the existing one-dimensional barcodes were too slow and held too little data for high-speed assembly lines.
“QR” stands for Quick Response. The new two-dimensional grid could be read from any angle in a fraction of a second and hold roughly a hundred times more data than a barcode, which is exactly what the automotive line needed.
The problem Denso Wave needed to solve
In the early 1990s Denso’s factories used stacked and linear barcodes to identify components, but those codes had to be lined up precisely with the scanner, held only a few dozen characters, and a single misread stopped the line. Workers sometimes had to scan dozens of barcodes per part.
Hara’s team set out to build a code that held more data, read instantly from any orientation, and survived dirt and damage on the factory floor. The breakthrough was adding built-in error correction so a damaged code still decoded.
How the design came together
The team placed three large square “finder patterns” in the corners so a scanner could locate the code and work out its rotation in one pass — no lining up required. They added Reed-Solomon error correction, so up to about 30% of the code can be damaged or covered and still read back perfectly.
Legend has it Hara was inspired by the balance of black and white on a Go board, and he tuned the pattern so the scanner could find the code anywhere in its field of view. The final specification was published and the patents were made freely available, which is why QR codes spread so widely.
From factory floors to phones
Because Denso Wave kept the patents open, QR codes escaped the factory and spread into logistics, ticketing, and advertising. In the mid-2000s Japanese mobile carriers shipped phones with built-in QR readers, and the code became a way to bridge print and mobile long before smartphones existed elsewhere.
When smartphones with auto-focusing cameras arrived in the late 2000s and 2010s, the same idea went global. Apple added native camera scanning in iOS 11 (2017), and Android followed, removing the need to download a scanner app and making the code effortless for the first time.

The pandemic boom
During 2020 QR codes went from convenient to essential almost overnight. Restaurants replaced printed menus with a code on the table, shops used them for contactless payments and check-ins, and event organisers used them for paperless tickets.
That surge settled into a new normal: people now expect to scan, and businesses expect to use codes for everything from WiFi onboarding to packaging instructions. The little square that started on a car part had become infrastructure.
